When Na’ama Uzan was only four, she took her first steps towards becoming a philanthropist. She decided to raise money to fund research to cure Angelman Syndrome, a rare neurogenetic disorder that afflicts her older brother, Nadav, now six and a half. Na’ama came up with the idea of opening a lemonade stand and inspired others in the community to run their own lemonade stands.

Determined to succeed, Na’ama, now five, has already raised $19,000. All funds are provided to the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics (FAST), the only organization in the world exclusively dedicated to funding research to cure the disorder. She intends to continue until a cure is found and plans to expand the Lemonade Stand Initiative to an international level next summer.

Don’t worry, be happy, live longer: Study

A study with more than 5,100 adults suggests people with positive outlooks on life have significantly better cardiovascular health.

Lead author Rosalba Hernandez, a professor of social work at the University of Illinois, says “Individuals with the highest levels of optimism have twice the odds of being in ideal cardiovascular health compared to their more pessimistic counterparts.  This association remains significant, even after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics and poor mental health.”

Sweeteners potentially harmful: Study

A recent study on the use of artificial sweeteners has health advocates weighing in on whether diabetics or anyone at risk of developing the disease are more at risk if using artificial sweeteners.

Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, medical director of Ottawa’s Bariatric Medical Institute, an expert on obesity issues, argues artificial sweeteners have been carefully examined in a number of studies, but none have definitively concluded they pose any health risks to consumers.
